Pittsburgh, PA– PennDOT District 11 is advising motorists that mechanical patching (milling and resurfacing) will continue on Route 51 (West Carson Street) between Corliss Street and the West End Circle (Route 19) in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, on Wednesday night, July 2, 2008. Due to inclement weather, crews were unable to complete the work last week.

To allow the milling and resurfacing operations to occur, southbound (inbound) Route 51 will be closed to traffic from 8 p.m. on Wednesday night through 6 a.m. on Thursday morning. Northbound (outbound) traffic will be reduced to a single lane through the work zone. Signs will be posted to guide motorists.

Posted Southbound Detour (see attached map):

  • Turn right off the southbound Route 51 (West Carson Street) onto Corliss Street
  • Follow Corliss Street to Chartiers Avenue
  • Make left onto Chartiers Avenue
  • Follow Chartiers Avenue to Steuben Street
  • Take left onto Steuben Street
  • Follow Steuben Street back to West End and Carson Street
  • Note: Due to the height restriction in the Corliss Tunnel, southbound trucks over 11’ 7” in height will be flagged through the work zone, which will require stoppages of northbound traffic. Trucks are urged to find alternate routes to avoid traffic disruptions.

Crews from PennDOT’s Allegheny County maintenance unit will be performing the emergency milling and resurfacing operations on sections of West Carson Street that have deteriorated significantly.

PennDOT advises motorists to expect delays and changing traffic patterns when traveling through the area.
